Self-guided tours allow guests to independently explore the entire facility at their own pace These tours are a great option for those who may require handicap accommodations as a customized tour of the ground level can be arranged. To maximize your experience, inquire about the *Audio Wand Guide, so you can learn-as-you-go! The self-guided tour will last approximately 45 minutes – 1 ¼ hours.  No reservation or advance ticketing necessary.

*Audio Wands are suggested one per person due to their low volume and close listening. 


Guided Tours


Guided Tours are ONLY Offered on Saturday & Sundays between June 1 and August 30. 

*Please note, Guided Tours are offered with TOUR GUIDE AVAILABILITY and are subject to change without notice. We suggest you plan to arrive at 10:30 on a Guided Tour Saturday or Sunday to inquire about available tours that day. 


Learn about the rich history of the Reformatory from a knowledgeable tour guide. Each guided tour lasts approximately 1 hour. While each of the tours covers a majority of the prison, the separate themes will grant access to specific areas not assessable by the other tours, which means something new to discover with each offering. Guided tours are kept to a maximum of 30 participants so that you might interact with your guide. No reservation or advance ticketing necessary. Please arrive early if you plan to take more than 1 tour while you visit. There are (4) guided tours to choose from:


Hollywood Tour 

See the office of the Prison Warden from Shawshank Redemption, the Parole Board Room and Andy Dufresne's escape tunnel. Hazard a trip into the sinister "hole." View the 1886 West Cell Block used as a Russian prison in Air Force One. This tour also involves extensive stair-climbing.

West Tower Tour   

Experience the view from the Guard Tower after winding up the spiral staircase. From this perspective, you will see the cemetery in which inmates were buried with only their assigned number on the grave. This tour also stops at the Big Dig, where you can observe the underground tunnel system. There is extensive stair-climbing on this tour. Taking pictures from the wall or Guard Tower portion of this tour is NOT PERMITTED.

East Cell Block Tour 

Travel the length of the East Cell Block, the world's largest freestanding steel cell block. On this tour, you will also pay a visit to the Catholic Chapel above the Central Guard Room. Get an insight into the living quarters as you venture on through multiple floors. This tour involves extensive stair-climbing.

Behind the Scenes Tour 

Venture behind the scenes as your guide gives you access to areas not open to the general public. View the West Attic and hear stories of inmate punishment. See "The Yard" where Andy and Red would sit and talk. Delve into the sub-basement and the inner workings of the Ohio State Reformatory

*Same Day Discount- If you are interested in taking more than Guided Tour, each tour after your first is only $8.00 a person. 

Please Note: Admission to our guided tours also include self-guided tour route access. Once you complete a guided tour of the facility you can explore the facility along the route at your own pace!

*Members of the Preservation Society receive the $2 tour discount. 

*Private Group Tours are scheduled Monday-Friday only and receive a discount with 20 or more participants.


The Ohio State Reformatory is closed for the following holidays.

Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day and any holidays that fall within our normal CLOSED times.
