The structure was built in 1886 where Peter Bissman's expanded wholesale grocery still stands today, but not in operation. In the early 1930s the twenty smokestacks on the north and south sides of the Bissman's filled the early morning air with the rich aroma of coffee, as its own brands Red Ban Java Blend, Steel Cut and Acme were prepared fresh each day. Downtown residents would wake to the scent of roasting coffee beans and return home at workday's end to the fragrance of roasting peanuts.

The building has an early Romantic Gothic styling and shares a haunting similarity with the Historic Ohio State Reformatory since they were both built in the same year by the same architect.

The Haunted Bissman Building aired on the SyFy Channel during a Ghost Hunter's episode in 2010!

SHAWSHANK TRAIL

The Haunted Bissman Building was the site in the movie, Shawshank Redemption, of the Brewer Hotel where Brooks, actor James Whitmore, went to stay and hung himself soon after being paroled from The Shawshank Prison. HAUNTED MANSFIELD OHIO 
In 2007 the building was leased to a major film production company, the Midnight Syndicate, for the production of The Dead Matter, a vampire movie that was released in October of 2008.
The Haunted Bissman Building, nicknamed as Dead Souls Studio, has a long history of haunted activities and has hosted ghost hunters from all directions including a recent visit from English ghost hunter Ellis Byrd of Gussethunters Paranormal.

I have personally been here and ghost hunters did not give them the credit they deserve. I had an amazing time here it was worth the money. I seen with my own eyes paranormal things happening. There is no way to debunk a light going on in a room across the garage when no one else was in the building. I also heard things as well. This building has paranormal activity maybe ghost hunters were nit lucky enough to be there when the spirits were. I know for a fact there are things there and i plan on going back very soon!

I personally have been to the Bissman building. It is definitely worth the money. I had an amazing time, I do not believe ghost hunters gave them the credit they deserve. I plan on going back this year. There are definitely paranormal things in this building. I believe just because they weren't present when ghost hunters was there does not mean they aren't there.( Because they Are) I have seen with my own eyes!

I saw the Ghost Hunters episode and was very disappointed in the "spin" put on the show, lots of debunking of claims, I would spend my money elsewhere.

I saw this episode on Ghosthunters and I was glued to the TV set. I would love to go on the Halloween tours just can't afford it. If anyone goes put up some good blogs and photos ...PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEase

This building is amazing. A must visit for any shawshank fan. This place looks so scary at night. great photo op. If you look in the front window, you can still see many of the movie props from shawshank. including the newspaper office. Off limits for tours.
